PRIME-AL INSTINCTS

PRIME-AL INSTINCTS.jpg

When I first got into makeup, primer seemed like a total gimmick. If your foundation is good quality and full coverage, why would you need to spend extra money on a whole other product just to help it stay on even better... right? WRONG.

Now that I know a thing or two about makeup, I feel like the complete opposite is true. If you're going to be spending good money on your foundation, don't you want to make sure it's going to deliver a perfect, crease-free complexion that lasts all day, every single time? Well, primer is the only way to ensure that. And with good primers, just a pea-sized amount is enough to erase pores, keep your foundation and concealer from creasing, and help make sure that your contour, blush, and highlight go on smooth and never patchy. And of course, that all of it lasts all day long.

That's why I'm breaking down my top 5 favorite primers today - and sharing why I reach for each one depending on the look I'm going for.

1. Urban Decay Eyeshadow Primer Potion

So this one is an eyeshadow primer... I wanted to keep this post to foundation primers only, but this stuff is so magical that I had to mention it. I have hooded eyes and oily skin, and this product has never creased on me. I use the original, which has no added shimmer. It's perfect for matte eyeshadows.

2. Becca Backlight Priming Filter

This primer has a pearly sheen to it, that makes it so radiant. If you want your skin to have that healthy, glow-from-within look, this is the primer for you. You can even mix a drop with your foundation so that more of the shimmer sits on top instead of only peeking out from under. This is my go-to for summer months to help achieve a sun-kissed glow.

3. Too Faced Hangover Primer

This tends to be my daily go-to. It's infused with coconut water, which makes it so refreshing. And it smells amazing! This primer is great for creating a natural, dewy look, and it helps brighten your skin.

4. Laura Mercier Foundation Primer - Hydrating

I get nervous using really hydrating products, since my skin is oily, but I haven't noticed any increased oil-production with this primer. Even so, I usually only wear this one during winter when my skin does risk feeling chapped and dry.

5. Trust Fund Beauty Gimme Good Face

And last but not least, my current favorite! I was absolutely hooked from the first use. This is a silicone-based primer, which normally I can't stand. I've always felt like silicone-based primers do a better job of blurring my pores, but they end up making my water-based foundations slide all over the place. However this primer managed to give me a smooth, pore-free, matte finish, and made my foundation bullet-proof.
